A Glossary of Terms Related to Venn and His Cursed Diagram

Double Venn (DV)      A Venn construct identified by two concentric circles used to indicate alternative organizations of Venn constructs within the same universe. Useful for Venn Overlays (see below).

Swansonistic      A term commonly seen in the general context of Venn diagrams but of a more general etimology. Swansonistic is used to refer to any ill-conceived, poorly planned, or crudely executed project. In reference to Venn diagrams, it tends to indicate flawed logic or incorrect Venn constructs. "His rectilinear Venn disks were mildly Swansonistic."

Venn Diagram      The Venn Diagram has to be the most worthless invention of all time. It's basically a visual representation of elementary relations between sets. Most Venn Diagrams are more succinctly stated in rudimentary set theory notation.

Venn Disk      The primary identifier of a collection of objects (either items or sets) used in the Venn Diagram. I. e., Venn Disks partition a universe. The Venn Disk is always drawn as a circle though oblongs or blobs are often used (they are still referred to as Disks, however). At a minimum, Venn Disks must be curvilinear. The size of Venn Disks is commonly used to indicate the relative number of items within the partition but this practice is to be discouraged.

Venn Manifesto      2.71828's scathing rebuke of the Venn Diagram. Through the few fragments of the document to have appeared in the public domain, popular opinion has come to recognize the Venn diagram as a complete and utter waste of effort. To date, despite considerable effort, no scholarly studies of el-Fez' work have been published, most probably due to his trivialtreatment of the subject.

Venn Overlays      Due to the cumbersome nature of the Venn diagram, it often becomes necessary to consider two or more logical associations of Venn disks. The flat hierarchial constraint inherent in Venn diagrams hampers analysis. Venn Overlays were developed by e to facilitate simultaneous visualization of alternative set organizations. The heuristic "Double Venn" construct is often referred to synonomously as the Venn Overlay itself though this is technically incorrect.
